Cat Savage (nee, Catherine) was born in Massachusetts. She spent most of her life there with family, where she raised her two sons. Catherine had traditional education. She’d hoped her family would support her early opportunity to complete high school at the then, Boston Conservatory of Music.
But, she made her way diligently; even working for a time as a professional musician. Cat married and had children, obtaining a college education when her sons were older. Cat has an AS in Science minoring in Chemistry, BS in Physiology of Exercise, BSN in Nursing and MSN in Nursing. In her heart, she was always an artist.
“To appreciate beauty means embracing it, not merely the accommodating the plain or ugly. A gratitude of beauty is to define each bit of nuance with my brush until I’ve seen it as my own perception. There’s so much beauty and wonder around us if we can see it. There’s sadness in the world; look for the good because it’s always there.”
Cat is a long time artist (40 years) in varied media, including oils and acrylic paints. Early on she did murals. Cat’s journey includes juried showcasing of photographic art in Massachusetts (MA) at the Peabody Essex Museum through Rockport Art Association. Other exhibition includes the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA. Cat also exhibited solo art shows in MA and her art can be found from Cape Cod to the Netherlands.
Cat formerly owned a gallery/gift shop in MA where her sons were a huge influence & help. Both sons were photographers in the gallery as was their father.
“I use canvas, wood & art papers, natural flowers or any interesting object to help me create paintings.” Cat began her art career creating murals. She even drew her children’s coloring pages. Her work is expressive & dreamy with an indolence that is peculiar, but easily identifiable. Her work makes you want to relax and breathe.
Cat’s process inclines toward classical alla prima (even with acrylics) with little to no formal drawing base. She often blends on her brush & loves the messiness of ‘lost edges’ or images trailing off the border. Artist Statement on Nestlings
The “Nestlings” series is a delightful association of petulant creatures. From the image & plan in my mind, to the last smack of my paint brush, the eerily lifelike countenances tacitly ‘shout’ at the viewer. They are not limited to children’s enjoyment (based on their subtle attitude). Keep an eye out for these selections being slowly dropped to the public.
Artist Statement on Imagining Florals
Unbroken brush strokes within dark or gem-like backgrounds; interspersed with ample, deliberate brush strokes create the flowers. I want compelling visuals to incite an experience of the image as if you’re inside it.
